Botanical Name: Citrus sinensis. Other names are Citrus aurantiumvardulcis and citrus aurantiumvardulcis sinensis. It is also known as Portugal or China orange.

Common Method of Extraction: The common method of extraction is by cold pressing. Oil of orange comes from the small sacks in the outer part of the skin. The yield is 0.3 to 0.5%. It takes about 1000 oranges roughly to get 20 ounces of oil. The process of extraction being cold-pressing it allows toxic substances like pesticides to be part of the oil. So it is very imperative that the orange peel used for making orange oil is from organically grown oranges. Orange oil is high in vitamin C and vitamin A.

Aroma: Orange oil has a sweet, fresh and spicy aroma. It is warm, radiant and lively. It is yellowish orange in colour and has thin viscosity. The aroma of bitter orange is a bit more delicate.

Largest Producing Countries: Brazil is the largest producer of orange oil in the world followed by United States of America. There are many other countries which harvest orange and makes orange oil.

Traditional Use: The origin of orange oil is China and then India. Those days orange was not used medicinally in Europe because it was considered uncommon and costly. But today it is produced in countries like Israel, South America and California.

Properties:

Orange oil is used extensively in aromatherapy and it gives a feeling of cheerfulness and warmth.  It calms down your nervous digestive problems. It can be used well for the digestive system of your body. It assists you to get rid of constipation, dyspepsia and it can be used as a general tonic too. Blends well With: Orange oil blend well with cinnamon, black pepper, clove, ginger, sandalwood, vetiver and frankincense oils.
